    TURESPAÑA and the APCE join forces to promote Spain abroad

    Turespaña and the Spanish Association of Conference Centres (APCE) have signed an agreement to improve Spain's position in the international event tourism market

The cooperation agreement, signed by the General Secretary of the Spanish Tourism Institute, Ignacio Valle Muñoz, and the APCE Chairman, José Salinas, in the presence of Turespaña's General Manager, Manuel Butler, aims to establish a cooperation framework between the two organisations to promote and develop international event, congress and convention tourism in Spain.

According to data provided by the Association, foreign visitors account for over a third of those attending congresses and conventions held in APCE member centres. This makes conference centres a tool for the international promotion and brand image of Spain abroad. In TURESPAÑA's opinion, the important role conference centres play in reducing the seasonal nature of tourism, their contribution to diversifying tourism products and to improving the quality of Spanish tourism are also a differentiating element in international markets, and are key factors in Spain’s tourism promotion policy strategy.

In the words of the APCE Chairman and CEO of the Valencia Conference Centre, "it is important to highlight the importance of conference centres in holding major events in Spain and especially international meetings, given that these centres play host to around 60% of the delegates that take part in these events and contribute to improving the global position of Spain whose international meetings have grown by over 100% in the last ten years, according to International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) statistics".

The signing of this agreement, which has an initial duration of two years and continues the joint work the two organisations have been carrying out since 2010, paves the way to achieve common objectives, improve the efficiency of the scheduled actions, and to support the marketing of Spanish tourism products on the international stage using different promotion tools and media, and especially through the net, information technology, communications, and cooperation in promotion and marketing programmes, in order to increase the number of international congresses and conventions that are held in Spain.


About the APCE

The Spanish Association of Conference Centres (APCE) is an essential tool in promoting the venues’ role as the driving force behind local development. Its objectives include defending the collective interests of its members and enabling the exchange of ideas and experiences on event tourism issues.

Over the last ten years, the number of APCE members has increased by 30% from 29 to 37. €1.5 billion were invested to build these centres and they have become important players in the urban transformation of the cities they are located in.

In 2011 alone, member centres hosted 4,981 events and welcomed 3,918,629 visitors which helped to generate an economic impact for their cities of around €1.2 billion.
